Description
The Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum is a jewel among the rocks of the Tucson Mountains west of Tucson, Arizona. It is both museum and zoo with wildlife common to the region exhibited in large enclosures mimicking their normal habitat.
The Mountain Lion enclosure has a sheltered cave for the big cat to sleep the day away in cool shade. It also has a small, thick plexiglass window behind so that people can possibly catch a glimpse of the sleeping cat. And this window gives the cat opportunity to gaze out at people.
Imagine the squeals of delight from the children at the window when this mountain lion sat up and gazed out the window at them. And my delight at being able to make this portrait of the great cat.
Mountain Lions are relatively common to the Tucson area and their population is healthy here. Once found across both North and South America, the populations in the Eastern United States and Canada are now very slim. But here in the American West it is still King of the Cats. Other common names are Cougar, Puma, Panther and Catamount. The scientific name is Puma concolor.
