Description
In the southwest desert around Tucson, Arizona are two varieties of Night Blooming Cereus, known as “Queen of the Night”. For most of the year these unique plants look for all the world like dead sticks, until spring. They slowly put out buds, and then they wait. No one knows why, but then virtually all of this cactus in the region will miraculously, suddenly bloom at once, and just for a single night. This might happen in early May, or June, or even July. The timing is as if they are all listening for a radio signal that we cannot hear nor understand.
The magnificent, large flowers bloom after sunset with a pungent, sweet scent that can be detected for large distances. Once the sun rises in the morning the flowers wilt and soon the cactus reverts to its inconspicuous form for another year of obscurity.
