Description
The rising sun of a clear April morning warms the spectacular, sheer walls of Mount Whitney and the great escarpment that is the eastern face of the Sierra Nevada above Lone Pine, California. At 14,505 feet in elevation, the highest point in the lower 48 States, Mount Whitney towers 6,700 feet above Mount Whitney Portal where this photograph was made.
After making a long sequence of images capturing the exquisite changes of colors on these magnificent mountains in the early morning light, I switched the camera to a vertical composition to make this portrait of the great granite mountain while the dawn’s early light was still warm with the air crisp and clear.
This photograph and others of the great mountains in the American West can be found in my Mountains collection.
