Description
The last rays of the sun color the clouds at day's end from Tucson Mountain Park west of Tucson, Arizona. It was the final color for one of the most brilliant and colorful sunsets I can ever hope to witness.
Silhouetted against this magnificent October sky are the giant Saguaro, along with cholla and prickly pear cactus, plus thorny ocotillo succulents, palo verde trees and jojoba shrubs.
Tucson Mountain Park was one of Pima County's best ideas. Covering most of the relatively small mountain range, it was established in April 1929. The park originally spanned over 36,000 acres until 1961 when the county deeded the northern 16,000 acres to the federal government. This parcel eventually became Saguaro National Park in 1994. Tucson Mountain Park remains one of the largest natural resource areas owned and managed by a local government in the U.S.
The famous Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum is located on the west slopes of the Tucson Mountains inside the park. Though an arid, desert climate, Tucson Mountain Park is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world with an astonishing array of fauna and flora species.
Moments after this photograph was made, my camera displayed those dreaded words, "Battery Depleted", making me even more grateful for the opportunity to capture this magical scene.
