Description
"Golden Gate Mountain Lightning" seems like it was just meant to be... After chasing the sunset in Tucson Mountain Park west of Tucson, Arizona, I had one roll of film remaining when the thunderstorm began building up over the Tucson Mountains in the huge Pima County park west of the city.
Using my widest lens I began making exposures of Golden Gate Mountain and the leading edge of the storm. I had already made 24 exposure and figured that my evening was over, but the camera still indicated I could take one more. No sooner had I opened the shutter when this bolt came ripping out of the clouds and touched down in the desert far behind me with an immediate and stunning wave of thunder. It turned out to be frame 25 on a roll of 24!
A year later is was featured by Tucson’s Arizona Daily Star newspaper as one of the top ten lightning photographs from the Southwest. When time came for the photos to be returned from the newspaper I received a curiously small envelope. Instead of the photograph I had a personal check from the editor and a kind note telling me that he was adding it to his personal Fine Art collection.
